Over 3.2 million students are victims of bullying every year. 160,000 teens skip school everyday because of it. 1 over 4 teachers sees nothing wrong about bullying and will only intervene 4% of the time? 17% of American students report being bullied 2 to 3 times a month or more within a school semester. By age 14 less than 30% of boys and 40% of girls will talk to their peers about bullying. 71% of students report incidents of bullying as a problem at their school. 1 in 10 students drop out of school because of repeated bullying.
To start with, I understood I needed to narrow my topic down. Bullying is a vast topic, and there are a lot of different ways of bullying someone. The concept is the same for any type of bullying. However, I need to focus on one type or two types of bullying in my song. There are different types of bullying:
Kids who are bullying can develop anxiety, depression, low self-esteem and a lot of other problems. In addition to all of this, kids that are being bullied are scared to tell an adult which is a major key in the process bullying.
After finding this information on the National Centre against Bullying, I decided that I was going to focus on the way people bully that I know the most about, the ones I experienced, in order to be able to express my thoughts and feelings better. To Conclude, I decided I would focus on physical bullying which consists on Sexual bullying which refers to sexual assaults; inappropriate touching and well as Verbal bullying which includes name calling, insults, teasing, etc. This process journal helped me make a starting decision about the context of my song. This site was really useful because I can now start to put pieces of the song and lyrics down.
Origin: The website I looked at is the National Centre against Bullying. This site has been created by the Alannah and Madeline foundation in order to inform the Australian community specifically about bullying. This website is made up of 21 expert willing to help with the website; most of them being psychologists, doctors, researchers and educators. This association closely works with schools, communities, governments and industries.
Purpose: The main role of this initiative is to speak out for children and supporting their right to be free from violence and bullying. Another purpose is to achieve safe environments for young people to live in, also to change attitudes about bullying and similar issues. Furthermore, to help communities gain the capacity to talk about this issue in order to prevent further problems related to that issue.
Value: This source is valuable to me as it talks about the different types of Bullying. Bullying someone can be done in many ways, which is a really important information for me. This source helped me choose if I was going to focus on bullying in general or address the song to my audience while talking about certain specific types of bullying that refer to me the most.
Limitation: A big limitation of this website for my project is the fact that it is a research made for Australian community which will limit me to only use general information. I won’t be able to look at any specific numbers on this source because I am focusing on Bullying in general around the World. I would need sources talking about the amount of kids getting bullied all around the world and not only in Australia.
