This source I found, while researching about the way people change and think differently after listening to music, argues that music has the power to move us and to change us. It has been argued that music was a tool used by many singers to refer to political disapprovement, to social discussions and to discuss injustices. As an example, Miriam Makeba a south African singer as well as Fela Kuti from Nigeria used music to discuss government-challenges as well as anti-apartheid. There are many other examples. Youssou N’Dour is a musical peacemaker in his native Senegal and lends his words and music to critical campaigns, such as malaria prevention programmes. In Zimbabwe, Oliver Mtukudzi's music raised awareness and dialogue around HIV and AIDS. However, music is now used almost everyday, in our everyday routine which even tends to bring most of the people not think about the messages in the song they are listening to. (Silva)Teengers tend not to think of the message, but even in simple rap music that they listen to everyday, the messages behind the lyrics are extremely deep and related to their everyday music. As an example, the song “Man’s not hot” composed by Big Shaq which is currently really famous, as a deep meaning behind it. This is the part that this artist repeats constantly:
“I tell her man's not hot, I tell her man's not hot
The girl told me, "Take off your jacket"
I said, "Babes, man's not hot" (never hot)”
The chorus is the key to understand the meaning of the song. A normal person thinking and listening to the song would say that the meaning is not to take your jacket off which makes no critical sense or doesn’t have any meaning behind it. However, Big Shaq, used that sentence to refer to a specific situation he experienced himself. This sentence “man’s not hot” refers to Big Shaqz status as a “roadman”. Roadmen in the UK are known for wearing baggy clothing and puffer jackets regardless of the weather, as the puffiness of the jacket is used as a form of protection from knife attacks. By using the words “Man’s not hot” he refers to the way he used to protect himself when living in the streets from knifes attacks by other roadmans. (Gorsler)
To Conclude, a message in music is the combination between the correct lyrics, the rhythm and the instruments. This marriage been this three musical features can stir huge emotions from its audience. It also engages the audience and mass of people to take action. There are many examples related to social issues as well as global messages. The Sigauque Project, a band in Maputo, Mozambique, who’s whose music is all about raising issues and trying to bring about change, composed of three artists Senegalese mbalak, Nigerian Afro-beat and Mozambican marrabenta was a huge example in the World history of a band using its music for a positive change in the World. “Now, you see musicians singing about girls, money and fast cars. Not long ago Africa was full of music that made a statement—about government, corruption, things that matter,” says Sigauque Project leader and trumpet player Daniel Walter. “Our music talks about HIV, women’s rights, recovering from a disaster, xenophobia and much more. It’s not just great music, we’re saying something.” (Silva)
