Taking Action
To start with, I was reflective and used my research skills to figure out and prove if music does make a change in people. If music didn’t ever helped make a change, then why would I compose a song about bullying hoping will change? I found out various points about the impact music has on the brain and examples of how the UK band “The Beatles” had a huge turnover on the young Soviet generation whom’s ideologies completely changed after listening to their music (see PJ3 PJ4). This research challenged by balanceness because I had to seek information from different media sources. After, I was sure music had an impact and can have an impact on people, I started composing my song. I had to research the best way of composing a song and therefore I interview two experts. I created my own way of composing the song by mixing both ideas and creating my own from their advices (see process journal 2). This project is mainly about sitting in your room and finding ideas, remembering all the bad moments I experienced and putting the feelings on paper, in a easy and quick way for your audience to feel it and understand it. Songs have to use easy languages and easy messages. It is important that the song’s meaning gets to the audience easily therefore no uses of metaphors are needed. After finding a chord pattern, Am; G; F; C, I sang until I found a nice melody for all the different parts of my song. Once everything was ready, I recorded it at home with my expert. We first recorded the guitar which took us 2 hours due to the fact that it was the first time I was recording and I had to sort out the way I was hitting the strings in order to avoid vibrations and unwanted sounds. After we recorded the main vocal, and I then improvised singing the harmonies on it. (PJ9 process video and recordings)
When I started composing the song, I started freaking out. I have to use my risk-taking learning profiles in order to continue challenging myself even if I didn’t know what to do. I didn’t know how to structure my song, how to know if my melody was good, if the arpeggios reflected the melodies... All of these complicated and confusing questions were all over my head. I had an expert that helped me throughout the journey and that taught me how to play the instruments on the piano so I could have an easier understanding of the notes that I could sing in order to create the melody.
I learnt many skills. The first technical ones are using the piano to tune my voice and create melody, the second one is record my voice and a guitar which was challenging because I had to make sure I wasn't saturating the sound, and lastly I learnt the steps and time needed to compose a song. My knowledge about music improved so much, I can now read the notes on the piano, use my own knowledge to compose a song myself. My thinking skills were challenged mainly two times. The first time was when my first expert, Raika, started to not come to any of our appointments. I needed her help throughout the journey but realized I couldn’t count on her. I lost a week trying to find a new expert and restarting everything with her. I used my thinking skills and went through the help of the school who had an old student which studied music and uses it now as her job. The second big challenge was when we recorded the song but the recordings were extremely bad. It sounded horrible. We had to reschedule a date to re record the guitar and some parts of the singing. Additionally, the drums were not fitting the mood of the song and I felt like my expert wasn’t understanding what I meant. I then add to communicate with an expert other than her in order to get feedback and show her what I meant (Process Journal Entry 9).
While coming to the start of creating a product, I relied mainly on the information given by the expert following me, Lara, and by experts I know in order to make sure I have their consent and ideas as well as the expert helping me out. As shown under, there are a few pictures of my conversation with my expert throughout the journey asking to meet and asking to make changes on certain aspects of the song, which involved my open-mindness. I was meeting constantly with Lara every week as shown under. I additionally made sure to use a different variety of feedback from all three experts in order to improve and to assess my final product (PJ10).
I was constantly meeting with my supervisor, Mr Esmail, in order to make sure I was on the right track, make sure I was developing good ideas and to make sure I was on task. Mr. Esmail was of a great help because I could discuss my ideas with him which helped me structure them and have a better understanding. He also helped me structure my writings and made sure I was currently documenting what I was doing and working on. We had many discussions about how I should write up and show my process due to the fact that composing a song is mainly in your room without writing a lot of things down. We met almost every week, sometimes to discuss about the overall project, other times to discuss about the document and at times just to make sure I knew what the next step was (PJ5 PJ6). I developed my communicators skills by communicating with the experts and my supervisor and additionally by interviewing two experts (PJ2). This was a challenging part because I had to write up. Therefore, I recorded the interview which was 15m long and shorten the questions down to the essential points I needed.
